AI is changing how research is conducted, making it possible to process larger amounts of information and complete time-consuming tasks more efficiently. But does faster research necessarily lead to better insights?
While AI offers new opportunities to expand and improve research, the quality of the findings still depends on reliable evidence, critical analysis and an understanding of the context in which they are used. So, what does it take to turn AI-supported research into insights that organisations can actually rely on?
AI can help researchers review large amounts of documents, extract relevant information, compare sources and produce initial summaries. This can speed up parts of the research process and give researchers more time to investigate findings, explore new questions and interpret what the information means.
AI-generated summaries and conclusions need to be checked against their underlying sources. Generative AI can produce convincing statements that are inaccurate, omit important qualifications or include references that do not support the claims being made.
Verifying important claims, checking original sources and tracing findings back to the supporting evidence are essential parts of the research process. This matters particularly when research informs investment decisions, market assessments or strategic recommendations.
AI can help identify recurring themes across documents, compare developments in different markets and surface relationships that may need further investigation. This is useful when research spans many sources or when relevant patterns are difficult to identify manually.
However, a pattern in the available information does not automatically establish a meaningful relationship, explain its cause or predict what will happen next. Researchers need to assess whether the evidence supports an interpretation, consider alternative explanations and identify gaps that require further investigation.
Understanding what a finding means for a particular organisation requires knowledge of its strategy, market position, capabilities and objectives. Two companies can encounter the same development and reasonably reach different conclusions about its significance.
AI can help organise evidence and explore possible interpretations, but researchers need to assess those interpretations against the available evidence and the organisation’s context. Discussions with the client also help refine the research questions and establish which findings have the greatest strategic relevance.
Faster research is valuable when it helps an organisation reach a well-supported conclusion sooner or investigate questions that would otherwise receive less attention. Efficiency gains should also be considered alongside accuracy, source quality, completeness and the usefulness of the final findings.
Organisations need to evaluate AI-supported research processes, identify recurring errors and establish appropriate verification practices. The level of checking should reflect the importance of the decision and the consequences of getting the analysis wrong.
Integrating AI into research requires a clear understanding of which tasks benefit from automation, what needs to be verified and where human interpretation adds value. Reliable source material and a clear connection between research findings and the decisions they inform are equally important.
At Catapult International, we combine research, data, external signals, in-depth analysis and human judgement to help organisations understand complex markets and emerging opportunities. AI can support this work, particularly when large amounts of information need to be processed, compared and structured. Interpreting the findings in the context of an organisation’s strategic questions remains essential.
As AI capabilities develop, research teams have new opportunities to investigate more thoroughly and work more efficiently. The challenge is to make use of these capabilities while maintaining the evidence quality and judgement needed to produce relevant, reliable insights.
We’ll continue this conversation at Future Day on 17 November, where our Future Insights roundtables bring together corporate leaders and decision makers to exchange experiences and perspectives on the future of research, market intelligence and strategic decision-making.
